What is Plug-In Solar?

Plug-in solar (also called balcony solar or socket solar) lets you generate your own electricity with a compact solar panel and plug it straight into a standard wall socket — no electrician required.

Following a government announcement in early 2026, the UK is simplifying rules for these systems, making it easier than ever to start generating solar energy at home, on a balcony, in a garden or on a flat roof.

Pair a solar panel with a portable power station to store your free solar energy and use it any time — day or night.

UK Regulations

  • Systems up to 800W expected under the new simplified framework
  • No planning permission required for most residential installations
  • UK systems use standard UK 13A (BS1363) plugs
  • Products must be UKCA marked and comply with upcoming PAS 217 specification
  • Grid-tied micro-inverters must include anti-islanding protection (G98/G99)
  • A smart/bidirectional meter may be required for grid-export systems
  • Register grid-connected systems with your DNO; standalone battery storage needs no notification
